Mobile money and betting accounts: how deposits and withdrawals work

In Kenya, most people fund their betting account with M-Pesa or Airtel Money. It is quick and familiar, but a few minutes of checking before you link your wallet can save you money and protect you from scams.

How deposits work

Licensed bookmakers show a paybill number in their cashier or deposit page, together with the account number to use. This is usually your phone number or your account ID. You can pay from the M-Pesa menu or, on most sites, enter your amount and approve an STK push prompt on your phone with your PIN. The money should appear in your betting balance within a minute or two.

What to check first

• The minimum deposit and whether the bookmaker charges a fee on top of your mobile money charges.
• How long withdrawals take. Good operators pay out to M-Pesa within minutes, not days.
• The minimum withdrawal and any limits on how much you can withdraw each day.
• Whether you must verify your identity, for example with your national ID, before your first withdrawal.
• How tax on deposits or winnings is shown. Check the bet slip and the cashier so you know what you will actually receive.

Staying safe

Only ever deposit through the paybill shown inside the bookmaker's official website or app. Never send money to a personal number, an agent on WhatsApp or anyone selling "fixed matches" or guaranteed tips on social media. Those are scams, and the money cannot be recovered. A licensed bookmaker will never ask for your M-Pesa PIN.

Because mobile money is so easy to use, it is also easy to deposit more than you planned.
